User Strategies: Considerations for UX Analysis and Design

DATE: Wednesday February 1, 2012
TIME: Registration & networking from 6:45pm; presentation starts at 7pm
LOCATION: U of T, 40 St George Street, Bahen Room 2175 (second floor)
COST:  Free for members, free for students with ID.  Join now for $20/year.

Users often pursue the same goal in different ways depending on the situation, their skill level or other individual differences. This diversity of user behavior and preferences is a challenging aspect of UX analysis and design. This talk addresses the following questions: (1) What do you mean by the term "user strategy"? (2) How can I analyze user strategies during product development? (3) What has already been discovered that I can leverage in my project? (4) How can I apply information from a user strategy analysis to a product's design? The answers provided in this talk are based on the presenter's lessons learned from several years of UX project work and from seeking guidance from UX literature. The talk includes a case study concerning strategies used by IT administrators working with enterprise software.

Paul McInerney has over 15 years of industry experience as a usability and user experience specialist. He works at IBM on products used by IT administrators.  He has used several task analysis techniques and has lectured/published on user strategies and other aspects of task analysis on several occasions. Paul has also written or presented on a variety of other UX/UCD topics ranging from design patterns to managing a UI design process.

Each day, device manufacturers ship more than a million touch-screen phones that enable new ways for people to interact with the Web. But when they get to your Web site or application –what kind of experience will people with these devices have? Will they be delighted by your mobile Web experience or frustrated?

In this workshop on Web design best practices for modern mobile devices, Luke Wroblewski will detail how to think about and design for Web organization, actions, inputs, and layout on mobile. Through presentations, collaborative sessions, and lots of examples, you’ll learn how to:

  • Use “content first/navigate second” organizational structures optimized for small screens and mobile use cases.
  • Design for increasingly prevalent touch interactions with appropriate targets and gestures.
  • Construct forms and input fields to make input on mobile easier and more frequent.
  • Manage layouts across multiple devices with ruthless editing, device classes, and responsive/flexible designs.
And more...

Armed with these design best practices and principles, you can make sure people have a great mobile Web experience whenever they visit your site.
